Are You Using the Right Tank Design for Your Industrial

Viscosity is the most critical factor in tank design for liquid blending. When the viscosities are waterlike (e.g., whiskey, beer, wine, window cleaner, mouthwash), the flow is turbulent. Almost any mixing tank configuration is allowed. It can be short and squatty or tall and skinny. It can be round, square, rectangular, horizontal cylindrical or even irregularly shaped. Although you can use just about any tank design for blending waterlike liquids, the tank geometry determines the placement and number of industrial mixer(s) for effectiveblending. As an example, for a typical miscible liquid blending application, you cant place one industrial mixer close to the end of a long, horizontal cylindrical mixing tank (Figure 1) and expect to effectively agitate the vessel contents. Odd shaped mixing tanks often require more than one industrial mixer as do very shallow pits and sumps. The optimum tank design for solids suspension mixing applications is round and has an aspect ratio of about 1:1. It must either be baffled with the industrial mixer on center or the mixer can be angleoffset mounted. A center mounted industrial mixer in an unbaffled tank does not effectively suspend solids. Straightvertical offset mixers in unbaffled tanks leave a significant heal of solids in one sector of the tank floor. Angleoffset mixers are generally restricted to relatively small volumes although we have used them successfully in 25,000 gallon tanks. It is important to recognize that solids can easily be suspended to a height of about 85% of the tank diameter with a single agitator impeller. However, even when multiple agitator impellers are used, it is generally impractical to suspend solids higher than about 1.4 times the tank diameter, and it is nearly impossible to suspend them more than twice the tank diameter in a conventional tank. An agitator should never be run at full speed while a vessel is empty or during slow draining of the vessel, especially if the liquid will be at the blade level for any appreciable time. However, when extra care is taken, an agitator can run at full speed during the emptying of the vessel. The caveats are: 1) it must be done quickly, 2) the liquid level should not be held at the blade level for any appreciable length of time (see above), 3) the viscosity is not increasing, and 4) the agitator

During filling:

There is sometimes a misconception with the operating of mixing systems during filling. It is generally okay to start and run the agitator during filling, provided that the filling is done quickly and the liquid level is not held at blade level. When liquid is added the agitator should run slowly and the speed should be increased as the level increases. Downpumping is required, in which the impeller is rotated so that the blades push the fluid in a downwards manner.

When solids are to be added:

If solids are not yet present in your vessel, be sure to add them once the liquid level is above the blade level. If possible, the agitator should be run at a slow speed.

When solids need to be added before starting a batch:

Prior to starting the agitator, make sure that the agitator is not buried in solids. An agitator should never be started under these circumstances. Instead, fill the vessel 8 to 10 above the blade level with liquid before starting the agitator.

When solids are packed above the agitator level:

If a situation occurs where solids are packed above the agitator level (not recommended) the agitator can be started but it must be done very slowly (less than ¼ speed) and with great care. If the agitator does not start, liquid then must be added to dissolve the solids before trying again.

Boiloff is the term that refers to the ambient heat input used to remove impurities from a process. During boiloff, the agitator should not operate at full speed, especially if the product increases in viscosity.
